Airservices Australia provides services to the aviation industry, including air traffic control, navigation and communication facilities, aeronautical data and airport rescue and fire-fighting services. TIP was used by Airservices to improve safety and efficiency. They deployed TIP to improve their ability to predict whether an aircraft coming into land at an airfield will be required to abort its approach and circle back to try again. The model was deployed in days and it was able to accurately predict 72% of the go-arounds that actually occurred, with an accuracy of over 99%. The TIP Explainer function, was them employed. It ran in real time and was able to identify the nine data elements that were least important to the model’s performance. This allowed Airservices to improve model performance quickly and repeatedly.
